Child abductions by parents up by nearly 90% over last 10 years

Government statistics reveal that the number of children being illegally taken overseas by their parents has increased by nearly 90% in the last decade.

In the year 2003-4, under 300 new cases were reported to UK authorities however there have already been well over 500 cases so far this year according to the s figures.

It is a criminal offence for a parent to take their child overseas unless they have the permission of the all of those with parental responsibility for the child. This offence is termed ‘parental abduction’.

However, a quarter of Brits do not realise that this is a criminal offence according to a separate government study. Further evidence shows that the peak times for such parental abductions are school holidays.

In response to the alarming figures, the UK Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office [ the FCO] has started work to educate parents about the laws regarding parental abduction and the devastating effects that it can have on the parent left behind.

If a child is taken to a country where the  on child abduction is respected, the child should be safely returned because this international pact dictates that children should be returned to the country from which they were taken. However, between 2001 and 2011 there was a 206% hike in children being taken to a non-Hague Convention signatory.

The FCO also found that 3 in every 4 people thought that fathers were more likely to take child illegally than mothers, when in actual fact, figures from Reunite International show that mothers were the abductors 70% of the time.
