Late last year, Parliament finally passed the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, and same sex couples in England and Wales will be able to get married from Saturday 29th March 2014. This is several months earlier than had been expected, and in order to be among the first couples to take advantage of the new legislation, couples will have to complete the legal formalities of giving notice of intention to marry on or before Thursday 13th March.
Having a date from which same sex marriages can be legally celebrated will lead to huge excitement across the country, as same sex couples can start planning their wedding, and demonstrate their commitment to one another in front of all their friends and family.
The same sex marriage legislation also gives legal recognition to same sex couples who married abroad. Under current legislation they are recognised as civil partners rather than as a married couple, but this will change in England and Wales in March also.
The government are also working on legislation which will allow couples who are already in a civil partnership to convert this into a marriage, and also on allowing people who are currently in marriages to change gender while staying married. The aim is to achieve these changes by the end of 2014.
